Bike library opens at the watershed

The Watershed sustainability centre has launched a library of cargo-bikes and trailers! They’re free to hire for up to 3 hours, and cheap after that. This is the project of Bike Club member Devin Gibson - congratulations Devin!

The bikes include a Gazelle Cabby cargo bike, an Xtracycle Radish cargo bike, a general purpose trailer, and a kiddie trailer. You can hire them out from the Watershed, which is located at 218 King St Newtown.

What can you do in the space of 4 cars!!!

Car free day is coming up and we want to get onboard with some fun activities for this special day. We all know cars take up a lot of space – even when you are not using it. People all over the world are now getting out and demonstrating that the space for car parks could be better used if the cars weren’t there, with the concept of Park(ing) day.

For World Car Free Day on 22nd September, we are asking you to get creative and think about what you could do with not one or even two car spaces – but how could you transform four car spaces to a space that is fun, productive, beautiful creative or just a bit different. If we can get enough ideas together – we are going to take the four spaces out the front of the chancellery reserved for special vehicles and let you loose on it for a couple of hours.

This is going to be fun for the sake of fun as well as being a bit of a demonstration. Start leaving comments with some of your ideas. The possibilities are endless…..

Bike Breakfast – Monday 23rd August

We plan to replenish your energy after your ride to uni, with a yummy breakfast. We will be set up on University Mall near the Sam Cracknell Pavillion. Come down between 8.30 and 10 am and grab some fruit, pastries, tea and other goodies before heading to class. It’s a great way to get to meet the people you park your bike next to.

“Captured bi-Cycling” photo competition

As we ride, we are exposed to so much beautiful and powerful imagery – whether it’s the scenery, the small gaps in traffic to weeve through, some one else riding past you or just you feeling free on your bike. We are asking you to capture some of this beauty bi camera and enter the UNSW Bike Club “Captured bi-cycling” photo competition. The theme is “the beauty of your bike ride” and entries should be inspired by your ride to UNSW.

For your efforts, there will be some amazing prizes on offer including a bike from Europa Cyclery, panniers from Gazelle Cyclery, helmets from Nutcase and a bicycle tour from Electric Velocity – so get snapping.

Entries should be submitted before 17th September by email to events(at)unswbikeclub.org.au. Before entering you must read the terms and conditions. You will also need to fill out a Model release form for any people featured in your photographs.

Bike Ride from UNSW to Balmain via Cooks River

Saturday 21st August we will be escaping the political placards and the polling booths for a ride along the cooks river and iron cove creek on a Saturday afternoon. We will be meeting at the Anzac Parade gates at 2pm to start our ride

We should be able to find a nice spot for a little rest for afternoon tea, before continuing along to balmain for a ferry ride into the city.

We will be taking lots of bike paths and quiet roads so it should be a relaxing afternoon. The ride will be a little under 30km, which is a good …distance for a nice half day ride. You also have the option of taking the train back from Croydon if you feel your legs getting heavy.

Loftus singletrack ride

Rally to support the new cycleways

There’s a rally happening at Town Hall this Tuesday night from 6pm-7pm. It’s been called so that cyclists can show their support for the City of Sydney’s new cycleways network.

It will coincide with a rally Alan Jones has called to oppose the cycleways, so bring your bikes so it’s clear which side you’re on!

Critical mass hits bourke st cycleway

Bike Loans Program rolls along

The Bike Loans program rolls along and is about to expand! Since September 2009 we’ve been supplying streetworthy bikes and accessories to UNSW students on a for-hire basis: for a $100 deposit and $5 per month, you get a bike, a helmet, a U-lock and lights. Then the city is your oyster!

We started with ten bikes (the number has sadly decreased to eight) but we’ve always had a stack of people on the waiting list. The good news is that thanks to the Macquarie Uni Bike Club and the Bicycle Recycling Network we have the makings of a new fleet–enough to more than double our number of bikes!

So if you’ve wanted to try going two-wheeled but haven’t wanted to commit to buying a bike of your own, now’s the time to hop on the Bike Loans queue! First, download the Bike Loan application, then print and fill it out (make sure to read the legal stuff at the top) and hand it in at the Arc Student Development Office (Level 1 of the Roundhouse). We’ll put you on the list and contact you when a bike is available.
